How to Move a Hot Tub Without Cracking the Shell
A hot tub isn't furniture — it's a 700+ pound, water-tight shell with plumbing, wiring, and a warranty that voids the moment it flexes wrong. Measure the path. Drain fully. Assemble four trained movers with a spa dolly and straps. Tilt on-edge, roll — never drag. Transport braced and on-edge. The 6-Step Professional Process
1. Measure Every Inch of the Path
Before a single strap goes on, measure the spa (length × width × height), every gate, side yard, doorway, staircase, and truck-clearance point. A 7-foot spa through a 6-foot gate is the #1 reason DIY moves fail on move day.
2. Drain, Disconnect, Protect
Cut power at the breaker, disconnect the spa pack, drain fully using the built-in valve plus a shop vac for residual water, then remove the cover and lock the cover lifter. Wrap the shell corners with moving blankets and shrink-wrap the skirt.
3. Assemble a Real Crew (Not Two Friends)
Even a small 300–400 lb spa becomes 700+ lbs of awkward weight with plumbing and foam. Four trained movers, a spa dolly, 4-inch ratchet straps, and appliance skids are the minimum. Anything less risks torn muscles and cracked acrylic.
4. Tilt, Dolly, and Roll — Never Drag
Tilt the spa on-edge onto the dolly, secure with straps at two anchor points, and roll on plywood over uneven surfaces. Dragging on the shell will crack the fiberglass base and void your manufacturer warranty.
5. Load, Brace, and Transport
Load on-edge (never flat — it stresses the shell) into a rated trailer or truck, brace all four sides so it can't shift, and drive slow through turns. A 60-mile move at freeway speeds with an unbraced spa is how shells crack in transit.
6. Place, Level, Refill, and Test
Set on a level pad (concrete, pavers, or a reinforced deck rated for 100+ lbs/sq ft filled). Reconnect power through a GFCI, refill through the filter well to avoid air locks, and run a full system check before adding chemicals.

When to Stop and Call a Pro
Stairs and steep grades
Every step adds risk. Anything more than 3 stairs or a 15° grade should trigger a professional call — a spa can roll and pin a mover in seconds.
Cranes over rooflines
Back-yard placements with no side access require a crane pick over the house. That's a licensed rigger, a spotter, and a permit in most SoCal cities — not a DIY job.
Hot tubs with attached decks or gazebos
If your spa is built into a deck, half the move is carpentry. Plan on cutting the skirt, lifting the shell, and re-decking the opening.
Cold-weather freeze damage
Even in Southern California, mountain moves (Big Bear, Wrightwood, Idyllwild) risk freezing residual water. Blow the lines with a shop vac in reverse before loading.
